  • Rear connector space: Coax connectors need room, especially if the cable exits straight back. A right-angle adapter can help in some installations, but it should be used carefully and without stressing the radio's connector.
  • Power lead routing: Power wiring should not be pinched behind dash panels or routed near sharp metal edges. Higher-current radios need appropriately sized wire and a proper fused connection.

Electrical and Antenna Details Still Matter

A tight-dash radio install should never lead to shortcuts on power or antenna work. The radio may be compact, but it still needs a stable electrical feed and a properly tuned antenna system.

Run power as recommended by the radio manufacturer, using correct fusing and secure connections. Avoid relying on a light-duty accessory circuit for a radio that draws significant current. Keep power wiring away from ignition-noise sources when possible, and make sure the chassis mounting does not damage factory wiring behind the panel.

For the antenna, use quality coax with a route that avoids crushing, sharp bends, and pinch points in doors or trim. Set SWR before transmitting. A small radio with a properly installed, tuned antenna will generally perform better than a larger radio connected to a poor antenna system.
